To see the details of this loom
pattern, you will have to look at the 3 pages that make up this
pattern, the image on the left does not really reveal all the details,
and even distorts the pattern a little.
This beading pattern was created as a possible pipe bag design. There
are several motifs in this design that are extracted from other
patterns on this site. The Creature in Red Ochre is Mishibeshu, the
"Underwater Lynx" known to the Ancient Ojibwe as one of the great
powers of Lake Superior. A representation of water and waves is showing
near his feet, And even though we see Summer Brilliant colors above, I
have included a hint of Winter's snows in the beading behind him. UP
here near the BIG Lake, summer is so quickly over, and snow is so soon
on the ground, that sometimes summer flowers will be frozen in full
color and hidden beneath the snow. It is a gift in Spring to see last
years wildflowers in full color appearing in the melting snows.
Under that is a "Shield" with a portrait of 2 women, and to me that is
a symbol of Strength and Continuity. They are sitting along the lake
shore. The 7 Grandfathers are shown in the 7 feathers, and below that
some Ancestor Figures "standing" on the colors of the next Summer to
come... as they always do after every counted winter.
I will leave the colors and configuration of the Fringe to your own
imagination. This pattern can be expanded, or lengthened, a border
added, or even a completely different image inserted in the "shield"
This pattern can be comfortably worked up on my 12" x 12" endless Loom.
